CFC supporting future poultry Veterinarians – the Riddell-Julian Scholarship

Nov 27, 2025

Chicken Farmers of Canada (CFC) is proud to support an annual scholarship available through the American Association of Avian Pathologists Foundation (AAAP Foundation). The AAAP Foundation Scholarships are open to students who are pursuing poultry health and well-being and/or food safety in North America.

Past recipients and current work

There have been four recipients of the award so far and each is contributing in different ways to the Canadian poultry sector. We recently caught up with a few of the recipients to see what they are up to now.

Vanessa Tuytel was the most recipient and is currently a third-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) student at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Vanessa grew up in Chilliwack, BC, on her family’s poultry farm and has gained poultry veterinary experience in working with the Canadian Poultry Consultants Ltd. in Abbotsford, BC. In her final year of vet school, Vanessa will be pursuing externships in the poultry sector as part of her clinical rotations.

Dr. Amari Patel has been working as a mobile veterinarian in southwestern Ontario since graduating from the Ontario Veterinary College. Her passion is working with small flock owners to optimize bird health. Dr Patel is currently the small flock representative for the Ontario Animal Health Network’s Poultry division where she collaborates with commercial poultry veterinarians to help identify and share updates about disease patterns within the province.

Dr. Hillary Schramm is another past recipient, and is currently working as an Associate Veterinarian at Production Poultry Veterinary Services. This is a private practice servicing all commercial poultry sectors in Ontario. Hillary’s favourite part of the job is the interactions with farmers, witnessing their pride in providing food to Canadian families. Coming from a farming background herself (dairy), she understands the weight of responsibility in being part of the system that puts food on the table. Now, as a veterinarian, she’s grateful to have the opportunity to make an impact on that system as well.

Congratulations to the current and former scholarship recipients, and we wish you well in your poultry careers!

Background

The Riddell-Julian Scholarship is named after two Canadian poultry medicine pioneers, Dr. Craig Riddell and Dr. Richard Julian. The scholarship is funded by Chicken Farmers of Canada, the national feather groups, and contributions from regional poultry vet associations and other poultry sector reps. The scholarship supports Canadian veterinary students interested in a career in poultry medicine and who are currently enrolled in one of the five Canadian veterinary colleges. The scholarship is awarded based on academic record, letters of recommendation, experience related to poultry, and a brief essay describing career goals.
