As a chicken farmer, you may receive advice on many different aspects of the farm and your business. Advice from nutritionists, your vet, the hatchery, processor, or others, can be helpful and this type of information sharing is encouraged throughout the sector. However, it’s important to remember that the requirements in the Animal Care Program must always be met with any changes you may consider making; this includes with lighting programs.
Lighting programs tend to be an area where advice can vary due to the many factors that influence lighting needs – growth rate, genetics, flock health, environmental control, nutrition, etc. However, any recommendations on optimal lighting must still meet the Animal Care Program requirements at a minimum.
The Raised by a Canadian Farmer Animal Care Program is based on the Code of Practice developed through a multi-stakeholder process with the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC). All requirements in the program must be met to maintain certification and sell chicken.
The standards you uphold each day have an impact. When you are committed to these programs, Chicken Farmers of Canada can work with partners throughout the value chain to provide them the assurance they need that farmers value the animals in their care and are committed to doing the right thing. Your commitment to the programs, the fact that we can say 100% of our farms are certified, is an essential element for gaining the confidence of consumers, grocers and restaurants. YOU, all 2,853 chicken farmers in Canada, are the reason we have a great program to promote!
