Supply managed farm groups react to the Supreme Court Decision

We want to clearly state that milk, dairy products, eggs and poultry can, and are traded between provinces to respond to market demand.

We are pleased that the Supreme Court has restored some certainty about various regulations of trade in place in Canada, including the validity of supply management.

This case validates the findings of previous court cases on interprovincial trade regulation of various agricultural and food products. Federal and provincial governments will continue to have the ability to cooperate on the regulation of interprovincial trade. We are pleased with the outcome.

With supply management, production responds to demand and farmers receive a predictable income, without relying on government subsidies for income. Moreover, all dairy, egg and poultry farms follow strict on-farm food safety, animal care and sustainability practices. Canadians can be assured that their dairy, poultry and egg products are produced with the same high standards from coast to coast.

Dairy Farmers of Canada, Egg Farmers of Canada, Chicken Farmers of Canada, Turkey Farmers of Canada, and Canadian Hatching Egg Producers are the voice of farmers in Canadian supply-managed dairy and poultry sectors.
